PROJECT SUMMARY

WINTER 2023 - ANIMATED LYRIC VIDEO

IN THIS 5-WEEK MOTION BRANDING PROJECT, THE FIRST DEEP DIVE INTO STORYTELLING IN MOTION.

I FOCUSED ON CAPTURING THE RAW EMOTION OF A SONG THAT DIVES INTO THEMES OF DEPRESSION, UNCERTAINTY, AND THE NEVER-ENDING CYCLE OF MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES. MY GOAL WAS TO TURN THESE HEAVY FEELINGS INTO A POWERFUL MOTION SEQUENCE.

“FULL CIRCLE” BY MOVEMENTS - 
LYRIC DEEP DIVE

BEFORE THE ASSIGNMENT, I WAS ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH THE VISUAL STYLE FOR THIS SONG AND THE VIBE I WANTED TO GO FOR. I BROKE DOWN THE LYRICS AND FIGURED SOME OF THE FINER DETAILS FOR HOW TO VISUALLY EXPRESS IDEAS.

SINCE HEARING THIS SONG, I ALWAYS HAD A VISUAL IN MIND. THE TITLE, "FULL CIRCLE," GIVES YOU A STRONG IMAGE BEFORE YOU EVEN PRESS PLAY. I DIDN’T LISTEN TO THE SONG AGAIN UNTIL I STARTED THIS PROJECT, BECAUSE I WANTED TO KEEP FROM SPOILING THAT ANTICIPATION FOR IT.







CONCEPT + MOODBOARD
THROUGH MY RESEARCH, I DETERMINED A VISUAL DIRECTION FOCUSING ON IMAGERY OF WATER, WAVES, AND CIRCULAR MOTION. THIS SONG IS ALL ABOUT THE CYCLE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, AND HOW IT FEELS LIKE BOTH DROWNING AND BEING CAUGHT IN A LOOP. THIS MAKES ME THINK OF CIRCLES AND SPLASHING.

USING A PHOTOGRAPHIC VISUAL STYLE WITH RELATIVELY SIMPLE TYPOGRAPHY, CALLING BACK TO INDIE SLEAZE AND 2010S ALTERNATIVE CROWDS AND CULTURE OF MUSIC’S VISUALS IT WAS TIME TO MAKE A  MOODBOARD.







STYLE FRAMES COMPARED TO FINAL GIFS

WITH ONLY FOUR WEEKS TO COMPLETE THIS, I HAD TO STAY ON TOP OF DEADLINES SET BY MY INSTRUCTOR, LARISA MARTIN, WHO GAVE US GREAT TUTORIALS, HELPING ME MASTER KEY SKILLS FOR MOTION DESIGN, LIKE UNDERSTANDING SPEED GRAPHS, EASING, AND SEVERAL KEY COMMANDS AND SHORTCUTS FOR AFTER EFFECTS.

THIS PROJECT REALLY SPARKED MY LOVE FOR MOTION DESIGN.















WHAT DID I LEARN DURING THIS JOURNEY?

I’D BEEN EXCITED FOR THIS PROJECT FOR A WHILE. I LEARNED THAT A GOOD WORKFLOW DOESN’T JUST FOLLOW MY OWN PACE—IT HAS TO FIT INTO DEADLINES AND SCHEDULES. THERE’S NO PAUSING HALFWAY; YOU HAVE TO KEEP PUSHING FORWARD. 

I’M PROUD OF HOW THIS TURNED OUT, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT MATCHED THE VISION I HAD IN MY HEAD BEFORE I EVEN STARTED. I’VE REALIZED THAT MOTION DESIGN COMES NATURALLY TO ME—IT FEELS INTUITIVE, LIKE MY BRAIN IS WIRED FOR IT.
